NP Practice Transitions in a COVID World

Nurse practitioners need support as they transition to practice. Some statistics suggest that NPs are twice as likely as their physician counterparts to leave their provider role in the first year after graduation (Barnes, 2015). Therefore, we need solutions to support NPs in ordinary circumstances. The COVID-19 Pandemic has made the need for support more imperative.

Nurse practitioners that were lucky enough to graduate in May of 2020 are facing obstacles. The primary care markets have stalled due to lower patient volumes and saturation of NPs in some areas. Organizations have imposed hiring freezes. Telehealth is emerging rapidly as a predominant model of care and training is needed. How will new NPs get support with the limits that COVID is having?

At Eastern Kentucky University, we want to offer a solution. In the fall of 2020, we will be piloting a series of courses to support NPs in practice transition. Supportive content. Weekly discussions live with the course faculty and colleagues. Get your questions answered and talk through your challenges. In my opinion structured mentorship offers encouragement, ensures support, and sets up success. In a COVID world, we need this more than ever. Invest in yourself and your future.
